S.H. Raza
Distilled Indian metaphysics into geometry. His Bindu — the seed point of creation — became a global symbol of contemplative modernism.
The painter who taught India a new way of seeing.
Sayed Haider Raza grew up in the dense forests of Madhya Pradesh, where, the story goes, a schoolteacher drew a single black dot on the wall and told the restless boy to concentrate on it. He never forgot. After Bombay, after the Progressives, after thirty years in Paris and a French wife and a French audience, he came home — to that dot.
From the late 1970s onward, the Bindu — the seed, the centre, the womb of the cosmos — became the organising principle of his art. He surrounded it with mandalas, the panchatatva (five elements), the tribhuj (triangle), all in his signature palette of saturated red, black, yellow, white and Prussian blue.
In 2023, Gestation became the most expensive Indian painting ever sold at auction. Raza had quietly returned Indian abstraction to the centre of the world.
