Raja Ravi Varma
The father of modern Indian art. Fused European academic technique with Indian mythology, making divine portraiture accessible through his pioneering lithographs.
The painter who taught India a new way of seeing.
Born into the royal family of Kilimanoor in the princely state of Travancore, Ravi Varma was a self-taught prodigy who, by his twenties, had become the most sought-after portraitist of Indian royalty. His breakthrough was technical: he was the first Indian painter to master European oil techniques — chiaroscuro, anatomy, atmospheric perspective — and turn them on Hindu epic.
His Damayanti, Shakuntala, and Lady with a Mirror gave the gods and goddesses of the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas a sensuous, human face for the first time. With the Ravi Varma Press, founded in Lonavala in 1894, he made these images cheap, colour-printed and ubiquitous — every Indian home from Travancore to Bengal could afford a god on its wall.
He is, in the truest sense, the painter who taught India what its own gods looked like.
